Tooth Whitening, is It a Black Art? Or Should We All be Doing It?

Over the last five years or so, tooth whitening has become a very popular procedure. Effectively, it is a process which is used to make your teeth appear a whole lot whiter, which for smokers, drinkers of coffee and red wine will know is a blessing. The tooth whitening procedure has become even more popular due to the number of celebrities doing it and because it has become a much cheaper and easy process than it used to be. There are even do it yourself tooth whitening kits available from your pharmacist, although we do recommend that you go to a professional.

If you want to get your teeth whitened, there are a number of different ways to achieving your perfect smile. The most well known is the obvious trip to your regular dentist, they will often do it as part of a check up if discussed before the appointment is made. The cost will vary as will the speed in which the whitening takes hold, the more popular method involves a handful of visits while the more expensive laser treatment will whiten your teeth in one visit.

Many companies now recognise that the teeth whitening industry is big bucks, as a result there are a number of well known brands who have released tooth whitening products to the market place. These are targeted at the same people who purchase a tanning spray and lotion and will often be found on the same shelves. Whilst these solutions are cheaper than visiting the dentist, they are not quite as effective, although it obviously depends a lot on how much whitening is required in the first instance.

The most important thing about having your teeth whitened is to ensure that they remain white. The best way to achieve this is to cut down on products that have colouring agents in them, one of the biggest culprits of this is cigarettes. Most smokers find that their teeth will yellow over time, whilst tooth whitening can reverse some of this, it is highly recommended that you quit smoking to achieve the whiter than white look.

Once you have had your teeth whitened, follow the advise of your dentist and wash your teeth three times a day. If it is convenient, try to wash them after every meal as well. You should look at tooth whitening as an investment, dont waste this investment by discolouring them so soon after the treatment.
