Everything you Need to Know about Lamps

Lighting can be one of the most confusing issues when making your house into a home. Finding the perfect lamp for needs is easiest when you know a little something about the types of lamps available. It is also helpful to know what they are generally used for. With this information you can chose the proper lamp to meet your needs.

The types of lamps vary and new ideas are being introduced everyday. There are still some basic lamps that almost everyone needs at one point or the other. Accent lamps are used to add extra lighting to a room. Table lamps are good if you have somewhere to set them and they are used for general lighting needs. Desk lamps are usually small and used to light a specific area. Floor lamps, like table lamps, are used for general lighting but are taller and set on the floor. Wall lamps are great fro limited space and are used for general lighting. These are the basic types of lamps and you will find that most lamps fit into one of these categories.

There are some special types of lighting that can make a lamp more suitable to your needs. Three way lamps provide three different levels of light from one lamp. To have a three way lamp you will need a special switch and bulb for that specific purpose. General lighting gives gentle light throughout the whole room. Task lighting is lighting that focuses on one area for a specific purpose. Protective lighting is used to prevent accidents or deter crime. These are just a sample of different types of lighting.

The last step in buying a lamp is choosing the shade. There are no hard fast rules, but there are some general rules about choosing the correct lamp shade for your lamp. The shade should be the height of the distance from the base to the bulb. It should be as wide as the widest part of the lamp or wider. The bottom of the shade should cove the socket. Lamp shades come in many different styles and some use the shade to express their style.

Choosing lighting for your home shouldnt become a headache. Now that you know the basics about lamps you can easily chose the right one for your needs.
