Endometriosis and Pilates

Pilates is a body conditioning system, invented by Joseph H. Pilates over eighty years ago. It is popular among performers and devotees of the fitness world, and its simplicity attracts many new practitioners. Pilates consists of over 500 controlled exercises that improve posture, reduces stress, and creates long, lean muscle without bulking up.

Pilates is designed to work for everybody. No matter how fit someone is, they can benefit from practicing Pilates. Although the benefits to practicing Pilates differ from person to person, six benefits are universal. These universal benefits include a strong core, increased strength and mobility, improved posture, longer and leaner muscles, is safe for everybody, and improves mind-body connection.

An interesting fact about this workout method is that it can help treat several diseases, including endometriosis by helping the body get back into shape. Endometriosis is a condition in which endometrium, the tissue that normally lines the uterus, grows in locations other than the uterus. Pilates has been proven to aid women with this disease by strengthening abdominal and back muscles. It doesnt cure endometriosis (the best cures are surgery, medicine, and hormone therapy) but can help sufferers deal with the pain associated with the disease.

For most women, endometriosis causes chronic pain that can seem unbearable. Pilates can help make the pain more manageable. Women who have endometriosis should consult their doctor before enacting any type of exercise program.
