Dust to Dust - December 3

Steve Cofield and ProCappers.com sports analyst Marc Lawrence will be cheering for two of the same teams Saturday -- though the outcomes could have different consequences.

They'll also be rooting against each other in the Florida State-Virginia Tech encounter, which actually could be the game that decides which player advances to the title match of the 11th Stardust Invitational.

The two players squared off Friday night in one of two 2005 semifinals showdowns.

Four participants still are standing from an original field of 16 individuals with ties to the gaming industry who were invited to participate by Stardust Race and Sports Director Bob Scucci.

Those two victors will vie for the championship and $10,000 accompanying prize.

Each week the two featured contestants make seven selections against the Friday night Stardust line, including a best bet that can be used as a tiebreaker.

Cofield used South Florida plus 9 as his top play, while Lawrence took the Chiefs plus 1.

Each man used the other's best bet as a regular pick.

Cofield, a radio talk show host, also used Rams-Redskins OVER 45 1/2, Browns plus 3, UCLA plus 21 and the Vikings minus 2 1/2.

Lawrence, a veteran handicapper who moved to Florida from Ohio last year, let his rep ride on the Steelers minus 3 1/2, Titans plus 16, Packers plus 7 and UConn plus 15 1/2.

Plays are discussed on a Friday night radio show that airs from 9 to 10 p.m. (PST) on KDWN-720AM. John Kelly and Seat Williams are co-hosts.

Next week's last semifinal match will highlight author/handicapper Andy Iskoe and the professional gambler known as Fezzik, who escaped into the semis with a 1-5-1 record last week.

Fezzik battled Iskoe for the lead in Leroy's College Challenge for weeks before nudging him out in the stretch.

Fezzik tied for first in the Challenge and is involved with Maj Ent, his co-leader, in a seven-game playoff this week.
